The inaugural release of our single vineyard Southern Margaret River Chardonnay, made with intention, dedication and a commitment to the coastal land that inspires it.
Jolif Chardonnay is an ode to the obsession and pleasure we take in this noble variety.
Tasting Note
Complex nutty and savoury aromas (think almond meal and grilled cashew nuts) lead to white flowers, pink grapefruit and green citrus. A subtle ginger spice and delicate char from oak is integrated and complements the fresh fruit aromas.
This is a wine that will evolve and grow with time in the glass.
White peach and salted pink grapefruit flavours on the palate are matched to pitch-perfect, salivating acidity, finishing with a fine, textural grip — all the result of a season that demanded close attention in the vineyard and small, deliberate decisions in the winery.
Vintage
An exceptionally dry start to the growing season and abnormally warm winter led us into budburst. Soil moisture was fortunately replenished by an almighty 244mm of rain in August.
Budburst was very uneven, associated with the warm winter temperatures and lack of chilling hours; however, most shoot growth and elongation caught up around November.
The uneven budburst resulted in a very drawn-out flowering and a lot of differentiation in fruit phenological development. All underdeveloped green fruit was removed; we were left with concentrated and intense fruit flavours, with lovely skin and seed ripeness.
Low rainfall from October to December, and, as is a regular occurrence, very low rainfall in January and February, allowed for easy picking decisions.
January’s average maximum temperature was 1 degree above average at 27.6°C. February was 0.3°C below the average maximum temperature (average 27.1°C). Night-time temperatures were close to average for key ripening months, with higher relative humidity during January and February.
The vineyard is farmed on organic principles. No accreditation.
